Davis Sons, Publishers Gala Birthday Celebration Set (or Town Next Week Cash, ValuablesTaken While Owner Watches World Series Game Thieves broke open a safe in the home of Frank Bailey on Route 1, Zebulon, last Saturday between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. and stole an un disclosed amount of cash and oth er valuables. Bailey, it was reported, was at the home of a neighbor, Mrs. Lu cy Carroll, where he had watched a world series baseball game. When he returned to his home he went to bed without discovering the theft. Bailey said the safe was in an- j other room where cured tobacco was stored. He said he saw the door was open slightly but did not suspect anything was out of order. The safe was a huge iron model that has been in the family for years. It belonged to Bailey’s fa ther and was lettered with “L. G. Bailey.” The thieves broke off the handles and mangled the safe door with heavy instruments in order to open it, it was reported. Finger print experts from the SBI were called in and the experts found prints, though it was not dis closed how many. The SBI also discovered automo bile tire tracks in the yard of the home. It was reported that Mrs. Mallie Upchurch said she heard “some thing like hammering” at the Bai ley home that afternoon. Mrs. Up church is a sister of Bailey and livs a short distance from the Bai ley residence. (Continued on Page 4) Popular Doctor Will Resume Practice Here Dr. Ben Thomas, who re cently completed a tour of duty with the Army for the past two years, will resume his i practice here next week. His offices will be located over Zebulon Drug Co. where Dr. L. M. Massey’s offices were. L A. Hagwood To Emcee Sing As in the past, L. A. Hagwood, the “old master of hymn-singing! conventions,” will be master of I ceremonies at the fifth annual North Carolina State Fair Singing Convention. Hagwood knows and under stands singing conventions as well, if not better, than anyone in the Southland. The sing will be held October 13 at 1:30 p.m. in the big Arena on the fair grounds. The event will last until 6 p.m. Some of North Carolina’s out standing groups of singers will participate in the hymn-singing, and groups in and around Zebulon are welcomed to participate. Band to Play At College Event Wakelon School Band has ac cepted an invitation to play at the annual Homecoming Day at Guil ford Cc liege Saturday, Herbert Ireland, director, has said. Wakelon’s band of more than forty insiruments was delighted at the invitation and has been re hearsing diligently since the invi tation. Band Director Ireland said he expects the Wakelon band to make a very g(»od exhibition at the col lege’s homecoming day celebra tion. Just In Time for Series R. Berkley Alford was notified last week that he was first place winner in a contest sponsored by the Johnson Cotton Company of Wendell. The prize awarded to Alford was a 1958 model portable Nathane television set. The contest was in conjunction with Johnson Cotton Company’s 36th anniversary sale. Shepard PTA Officials Urge Student Activities Since the opening day of the 1957-58 school year, the principal, teachers and students at Janies E. Shepard School have been very busy, E. E. Shipman has reported. Realizing that the students en joy taking part in different activi ties, the school authorities have arranged for many extra organiza tions to be formulated and others to be continued as part of the cur riculum. Students have the op portunity to participate in the fol lowing activities: glee club, dra matics, school publication, band, debating, basketball and public speaking. Other organizations which the students may participate in are the American Junior Red Cross, Crown and Sceptre Club, 4-H Club, F. F. A. and N. H. A. All students, Shipman said, are urged and encouraged to partici pate in at least one of the activi ties. To speed up the serving of lunches in the school cafeteria, tickets are being sold daily. Stu dents may save 25 cents each week | by purchasing a week’s supply of tickets each Monday. The PTA held its second meet ing last Monday night, Oct. 7. Un less further changes are made, the PTA will convene each Monday night after the first Sunday of each I month. Florist To Speak To F B Women Mrs. Lucille Pippin, florist, will demonstrate methods of arranging dried flowers at the October meet ing of the Zebulon Farm Bureau Auxiliary, Mrs. Howard Massey, president, has announced. The Auxiliary will meet Monday night, Oct. 14, in the home eco nomics department of Wakelon School. The meeting will get un deyway at 8 o’clock. Mrs. Massey urges all members of the Auxiliary to be present. Other women will be cordially welcomed at this meeting. CLUBHOUSE OPEN Mrs. A. S. Hinton, president of the Senior Woman’s Club, has announced that the club house will be open from 10 a m. to 5 p.m. during the day of the parade, Oct. 18, for persons to relax and refresh themselves. Refreshments to be on sale at the club house will be sandwiches, pop drinks, sal ads, desserts and coffee. The j proceeds from the sale of these items will go into the club house fund. Jr. GAs to Meet Junior GAs will meet at the Zeb ulon Baptist Church tomorrow af ternoon at 3:30 to elect officers, make plans for the new year’s work and enjoy light refreshments. Mrs. F. T. Scarborough and Mrs. Ashley Murphy, adult leaders, urge parents of girls newly pro moted to the Junior Department in Sunday School to tell their daughters about GAs and encour age membership. On hand to welcome new mem bers will be Cheryl Gay, Marie Scarborough, Charlotte Scarboro, Margaret Dunn, Jan Lee, Faye Sawyer, Patsy Braswell, Sue Arn old, Debbie Massey, Phyllis Las pina, and Georgia Hinton. These girls have been active in Junior GAs previously but were not pro moted to the Intermediate Depart ment. GAs follow a program of basic Bible study, mission work, and stewardship designed to prepare them for service and leadership in the church and the WMU when they become adults. As an extra dividend the girls gain experience as hostesses by taking turns hav ing the meetings in their homes. NCEA EVENT The principal and Wakelon School faculty will be host to the North Carolina Education Asso ciation at the school tonight (Thursday), Principal John J. Hicks has announced. Approximately 275 teachers from the schools of Wake County will be guests at the picnic dinner to be held on the campus of the school, Principal Hicks said. The speaker at this event was not announced, though it is expect ed to be Fred Smith, Superintend ent of Wake County Schools. Big Crowd Expected For Many Festivities Legion Auxiliary Meets, Makes Plans Plans were made by the six members present of the American Legion Auxiliary to participate in Zebulon’s 50th anniversary when the members of the group met Fri day night, Oct. 4, in the home of Mrs. Sidney Holmes. On October 21, some of the members of the Auxiliary will go to the Veteran’s Hospital in Dur ham to distribute cigarettes to the patients. Mrs. Bill Perry, president, re minded the members present that October is membership month and urged each old member to bring in a new member. At the meeting Christmas Cards were distributed to each membe| for sale. Anyone who needs cards for the holiday season is urged to contact a member of the Auxili ary. A short program on the educa tion benefits available for veter ans’ children was given by Mrs. Perry. The meeting was called to order by the president, with prayer by Mrs. Dabney Gill. The members then repeated the preamble to the Constitution and sang one verse of the National Anthem. Following the business session and program, Mrs. Holmes served refreshments of individual pecan pies topped with ice cream, potato chips and coffee. The next meeting will be held in November with Mrs. Gilford Bufkin as hostess. DID ATTEND Mrs. Elizabeth Ellett was inad vertently omitted from the list of persons who attended the North Carolina League of Municipalities convention held in Raleigh recent ly Mrs. Ellett is a member of Zeb ulon’s Town Board of Commis sioners. | Plans Nearing Completion Bunting is being readied, plans are being completed and excite ment is beginning to take hold. Next week Zebulon’s 50th birth day will be celebrated with pomp, dignitaries and numerous festivi ties. Parade chairmen Frank Wall and Aaron Lowery have said the parade is “shaping up very well.” More than 12 beautifully deco rated floats have been purchased by the merchants of the town, the chairmen said, and additional floats are expected to be be sold. A large number of bands from* surrounding towns and schools have accepted invitation to partici pate in the parade, Worth Hinton said. More are being contacted and are expected to accept. Lowery urged all persons who desire to contribute entries for the parade to contact him or Wall. He also requested that persons who own riding horses, ponies and pony carts to notify the parade chairmen immediately. Persons who have lived in or near the town for the past fifty years are asked to notify Wall or Lowery. These persons will be hon ored during the day. Mrs. Norman Screws, who is heading the fashion exhibition, said this phase of the celebration is “coming along nicely.” She is eager to secure clothes represent ing the fashion eras for the past fifty years . . . ball gowns, hobble skirts, bustle dresses, dresses of the flapper age, carriage gowns and others. Each business concern which sells women’s clothing will be rep resented in the fashion show. This show is to take place at Davis Armory during the intermission of the dance. The dance, which purports to be a gala affair, is to be held Satur day night at Davis Armory. Hom er Briarhopper and his orchestra is to play for the dance. Also on the program will be Clyde Moody, famous folk and ballad singer. On Sunday, Oct. 20, the Metho dist and Baptist churches will hold anniversary services. Wakelon Making Plans For Homecoming Day Plans are being readied for Wakelon School’s annual home coming, Principal John J. Hicks has announced. The school’s homecoming is be ing held in conjunction with Zebu Ion’s Golden Anniversary celebra tion. Following the mammoth parade to be held by the town Friday, Oct. 18, the school is sponsoring a pork barbecue supper at the school’s cafeteria. This benefit supper will be from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Principal Hicks said the revenue realized from this supper will be used to relieve the school’s indebt edness and for instructional serv ices. The plates of barbecue with all the trimmings will sell for $1. Beginning it 8 o’clock Wakelon’s football team will meet the Mill brook squad in what is expected to be a heated contest. The Wake Ion Bulldogs, who have lost three games and tied in one match, are expected to rally for a win for the homecoming. During half time, the homecom ing queen will be crowned. Nomi nations are now being conducted at the school and the queen is ex pected to be named by the first of next week. The Wakelon Alumni Associa tion, headed by Miss Gladys Baker, will participate in the school’s cel ebration.
